Sagitta Licenses Automated Optical Fiber Connector Assembly Manufacturing Technology from Corning Cable Systems

( FEBRUARY 2004 )

HAUPPAUGE, New York, Feb 11, 2004

Sagitta, an innovative provider of automated processing solutions for the fiber optics industry, has signed an agreement with Corning Cable Systems Technology, Inc. to exclusively license its automated manufacturing technology for fiber optic patch cord termination. The novel technology developed by Corning Cable Systems encompasses one of the most advanced and efficient automated optical fiber connector terminating lines ever developed and has enabled Corning Cable Systems to achieve its leadership position.

Sagitta will add its expertise in machine vision, submicron polishing, and adaptive process control to create a line of robust and cost effective optical connector assembly manufacturing cells to augment its innovative Gemini Cx machine. The Gemini Cx was introduced in 2002 and integrates polishing, cleaning, and inspection in one manufacturing cell for simplex and multi-fiber optical connectors achieving high throuput at very high yields.

“We successfully introduced the first automated high volume polishing & inspection machine, the Gemini Cx, in 2002 and this relationship will enable us to follow through with additional cells as early as this year” said Amir Chitayat, Sagitta’s CEO. He added “We are committed to becoming the leading equipment provider to the fiber optic patch cord industry and this relationship will enable us to achieve this faster and better. We are proud of the fact that Corning Cable Systems has teamed up with us, demonstrating their confidence in our ability to bring novel manufacturing solutions to the patch cord industry”

Otto Szentesi, Corning Cable Systems’ Sr. VP, Director, Hardware & Equipment Technology commented, “I have been impressed with Sagitta’s Gemini machine and their innovative thinking and I am confident that they will utilize Corning Cable Systems’ technology wisely to bring to market solutions that will greatly enhance the production and cost effectiveness of optical connectivity manufacturing worldwide.”
